Annette Patton, PhD

Lead Geoscientist

Annette is the Lead Geoscientist at the Sitka Sound Science Center. She grew up in Corvallis, Oregon, learning a love of mountains and the outdoors. One of her main topics of research is understanding landslide initiation, including the geology, geomorphology, and weather patterns that make a hillslope more susceptible to landslides and debris flows. After graduating college, Annette worked as a geologic mapper for the Washington State Geologic Survey and later earned her MS and PhD at Colorado State University. Her PhD research focused on evaluating the impacts of climate change on landslide occurrence in Denali National Park. Recently, Annette's work includes research to develop and implement the landslide forecasting system in Sitka and other communities in Southeast Alaska. When she is not on the hillslopes for work, Annette enjoys exploring mountains by foot, bike, and ski with her dog, Copper.
