A Walk Thru Time
This month we had a “Walk Thru Time” event at the Science Center in which we celebrated the past uses of our facilities. Using four stations in the Sawmill and Sage buildings, experts shared stories about our rich history. Steve Clayton, Thad, James and Rebecca Poulson talked to attendees about the Brady Log Haul, used to haul wood into the sawmill building which trained students. The Log haul has been refurbished and is now on display outside our buildings along the Sitka Seawalk. Nancy Yaw Davis shared stories of growing up around the Sitka Sawmill building which her dad, a past president of Sheldon Jackson College, oversaw in construction. SSSC is currently raising funds to renovate the Mill Building. Nancy Ricketts spoke about collecting trips with her dad, Ed Ricketts. Ed was a co-author along with Jack Calvin of the seminal textbook Between Pacific Tides. Mary Purvis read from her grandparents’ (Jack and Sasha Calvin) journal about travelling by canoe from Tacoma to Southeast Alaska. Their canoe is on display in our Calvin classroom in the Sage Building.
