Grow AL-G with SSSC

In a place like Sitka, we are all keen observers of the world around us. People living on these lands and waters have relied on their understanding of this unique ecosystem to support their wellbeing and livelihood since time immemorial. Our rich connections to the ocean, rivers, mountains, and forest only grow more important in our changing world.

For nearly one hundred years, the grounds and buildings that now make up the facilities of the Sitka Sound Science Center have served our community as a hub of scientific learning and discovery. Students, researchers, locals, and visitors from around the world consider questions about the future of our ecosystem, fisheries, climate, and more. Inquiries about our local environment take on global significance as we move into the next century.

You can support this curiosity and care for our world with a contribution to the Aquarium, Laboratories, and Grounds (AL-G) Project. This project will honor the history of our grounds and the Sage Building while providing much-needed updates to infrastructure and facilities that date back to 1929. Scientists, students, community members, and visitors will have the opportunity to engage with place-based knowledge, cutting-edge science, and the questions whose answers concern all of us in this interconnected and ever-shifting world.

Aquarium

Our remodel plans include an amazing upgrade of our current display tanks, while keeping our touch tank favorites. We’re looking forward to having a designated octopus tank, multiple jellyfish tanks, and so much more. Plans include a surge tank which mimics tidal flux showcasing the power of our oceans and how animals have adapted to thrive in such extreme environments. We’re also thrilled for the prospects of at 12 foot tall tank displaying our local kelp forests and the numerous animals that call them home.

Laboratories

Our current equipment and laboratory spaces have housed countless discoveries allowing our scientists to answer their questions. But, with our remodel we will be able to offer our scientists state-of-the-art research space and equipment allowing them to delve deeper into the questions that matter.

Grounds

Our remodel will open up and level out the ground surrounding our building. We will clear walk ways and have designated space for our visitors to get up close perspectives of our operations all while avoiding crossing paths with our working staff. Paved areas and boardwalks will open the space and create flow between all stages of our Salmon Hatchery Tour. This paired with informational signage will allow for self guided walking tours.
