Baby Lion’s Mane Jellyfish Have Arrived
We are so excited to be welcoming our lab’s newest additions. Jellyfish have a very interesting life cycle which consists of at least 5 major stages depending on species. Our lion’s mane, Cyanea ferruginea, started as larvae from their parents, transformed into polyps and are now producing baby jellies called ephyrae. There are only a few now, but more are on the way! They are actively consuming cultured rotifers and are growing well. We can’t wait to see how large they will grow, in the wild they can rarely reach up to 8ft wide and 120ft long.
When you donate to Sitka Sound Science Center you are supporting our aquarium and all the wonderful creatures that we care for.
The aquarium serves as a tool to aid in education and research programs contributing to increasing understanding and awareness of the aquatic, marine and terrestrial ecosystems of coastal Alaska.
