October 3, 2024, by Lauren Bell

Late in September, SSSC Research Director Lauren Bell traveled south to learn and participate in the Haida Gwaii Abalone Summit: Gud ahl tl’ hlG̱anggulas Galgahl’yáan damaan an hl tla ḵinggaa (People working together to take care of abalone). Co-hosted by the Council of Haida Nation, Gwaii Haanas/Parks Canada, and the University of California Berkeley, this meeting brought together knowledge holders from First Nations, communities. universities, government agencies, and NGOs to share knowledge and perspectives about Galgahl’yáan abalone, with the goal of informing development of a Haida Abalone Management Plan.

Lauren was honored by the invitation to present alongside SSSC partner Kristy Kroeker (UCSC) as well as Taylor White (Sitka/UCSC), and she came away from the meeting with a full mind and a full heart. Háw’aa thank you to the Abalone Summit Working Group for the opportunity to listen and learn during this phenomenal gathering.
