Harbor Mountain Weather Station Back Online!

December 6, 2021, by Alex McCarrel

The Harbor Mountain Weather Station is up and running again! Jacyn Schmidt, Geoscience Coordinator, Alex McCarrel, Research Coordinator, and Harry Wojtas, Jesuit Volunteer, braved the snow and ice last week to make the long climb up to the weather station, located between Cascade Creek and Granite Creek drainage basins that forms the western flank of Harbor Mountain. Staff members upgraded ailing radios that were the culprits of the problem, creating a stronger connection between the weather station and its receiver at the Sitka Ranger Station.

The sensing station monitors wind speed and direction, precipitation, temperature, humidity, and snow depth, which you can access the data here in real-time. Some troubleshooting is still in progress for the sensor that measures wind speed and direction, but all other data is up to date. The Harbor Mountain Weather Station aids in making informed decisions about landslide risk, as well as offering detailed and accurate forecasts to our community of fisherman, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts who rely on it year-round.
