Haunted Aquarium Rises from the Dead!

October 21, 2022, by admin

Something in the air is changing. Most tourists have come and gone, rainy days grow more frequent, and the darkness of a new season is creeping in. Those of us who remain on this island through the fall and winter know that this time of year is different. Things are shifting all around us, including…what was that? A bump? A rustle? The shuddering arrival of…Haunted Aquarium?!

Your eyes and ears do not deceive you. Haunted Aquarium returns this year for an evening of frightful fun for the whole family at the Sitka Sound Science Center! This annual event, dormant during the peak of the pandemic, is at last emerging from its erstwhile grave. And much like the event itself is rising from the dead, we’ll see zombies and undead creatures of all kinds bursting into the Science Center just in time for Halloween.

Join us on Thursday, October 27 from 6:00 to 8:00pm for zombified crafts, experiments, snacks, and encounters. We’ll have owl pellets to dissect, mysterious substances to concoct, cookies to decorate, and an aquarium to explore. Finally, if you are brave enough, you can also embark on a tour of the Haunted Hatchery, where you’ll learn the terrible tale of undead fish and hatchery technicians.

We are so looking forward to this event, which allows us to welcome the community to our spaces, have some fun with people of all ages, and shed our office clothes and hatchery rain gear in exchange for the lab coats of mad scientists, the scales of zombie salmon, and, well, rain gear (but scarier). Halloween brings out our excitement and fascination at the unknown and the mysterious, and ultimately, that’s exactly what the Science Center is all about. Whether you’re wondering what the zombies in the Haunted Hatchery will do next or why salmon swim upstream, the Science Center will always be a place for the curious.

Tickets for Haunted Aquarium are $5 for access to the aquarium and hands-on activities, and $10 for access to the aquarium, hands-on activities, and the haunted hatchery tour. Tickets are available at the door or at Old Harbor Books.
