Description

The Education Coordinator works collaboratively with education staff and content experts to develop and facilitate in-school and out-of-school education programs.  Primarily, this position coordinates in-school education programs at the secondary level (6 – 12th grade) and spearheads after school and summer programming.   

Education coordinators go beyond coordination of logistics for programming.  An Education Coordinator is expected to build collegial relationships with classroom teachers, to be familiar with grade level curriculum and standards, to creatively connect researchers and their projects to classroom curriculum, and to apply best teaching practices in developing and facilitating education programs.

Tasks

  •  Foster and maintain productive relationships with educators in Sitka schools and with partnering organizations; 
  • Advise and guide scientists participating in SSSC’s Scientists in the Schools project as to school schedules, culture, expectations, and age-appropriate teaching practices;  
  • Collaborate with education team to assess and refine existing education programs; 
  • Create new curriculum collaboratively with education team and in-house experts, community knowledge holders, and scientists; 
  • Using a curriculum template, formally document the curriculum of each education program; 
  • Work with education team to support education programming at all levels as needed; 
  • Assess community need and organizational capacity for out-of-school programs; 
  • Create registration for camps, after-school, or other sign-up programs, monitor registrations, and follow through on related communications; 
  • Report on program participation and evaluation tasks; 
  • Participate in weekly Education Steering meetings at SSSC and other partner meetings as needed.  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

Applicants are expected to have a bachelor’s degree with preference given to those with an advanced degree or related work and life experience in formal education. The applicant must exhibit experience in working collaboratively as part of a team and a strong sense of curiosity and creativity.  The candidate is also expected to have a strong interest in experiential education and have the capacity to work well across disciplines and cultures.  

The ideal Education Coordinator will have background and interests in many of the following areas:

  • Outdoor education 
  • Environmental education 
  • Southeast Alaska ecology 
  • Community strengths and challenges 
  • Indigenous culture, traditional values, and practices 
  • Outdoor adventuring, especially in the areas of hiking, kayaking, snorkeling 

Desired Qualifications 

Individuals with interdisciplinary training who are interested in an education career focused on developing excellent practices in teaching as a community partner to local schools are a good fit for this position. The ability to adapt approaches in diverse education programs based on an understanding of childhood development and scientific thinking as well as the ability to communicate with different audiences is critical.

Background

Sitka Sound Science Center (SSSC) is a nonprofit 501(c)3, research and education organization. Our mission is to improve the understanding and awareness of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of Coastal Alaska through scientific research and science education. SSSC is located in Sitka, Alaska. 

At SSSC, the Education team works to leverage research relevant to coastal Alaska, activities related to the SSSC’s SJ Hatchery and Ahlgren Aquarium, and local knowledge to create place-based and experiential interdisciplinary programs that promote curiosity and critical thinking.
