The Sitka Sound Science Center is a science and education nonprofit formed in 2007. SSSC is dedicated to increasing understanding and awareness of marine, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of coastal Alaska through science education and research. About

SSSC is looking for a part-time Maintenance & Facilities Technician with a broad range of maintenance, fabrication, and building skills. This position will assist with maintaining the physical structures, vehicles, and grounds of SSSC. We have 3 main buildings on our campus and a bunkhouse offsite, along with several vehicles and boats, freshwater and saltwater systems, and other equipment. The technician will help with scheduled maintenance tasks around the SSSC campus and bunkhouse. SSSC values both independence and collaboration within and across departments, the ability to work with others and identify maintenance needs independently will be key.

The Maintenance & Facilities Technician will also assist staff and visiting researchers plan, construct, and maintain basic infrastructure for programs and research experiments. The ability to work with a wide range of people, listen to ideas, plan, adjust, and build will be central to this position. We are looking for someone who enjoys collaboration and can think creatively. Experience with basic plumbing, welding, and construction will be helpful.

Tasks

  • Assist with the maintenance plan by cleaning, inspecting, testing, and/or repairing the facilities and equipment based on the established schedule.
  • Identify other maintenance needs around the facility and make the necessary repairs.
  • Work with staff and researchers to support them with fabrication, building, set-up, and maintenance needs.
  • Assist with keeping the tools stocked and operational.
  • Maintain a clean workspace.

Qualifications

  • You enjoy planning and building in collaboration with others.
  • You have a broad skillset that may include welding, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical systems, vehicle maintenance, and/or electrical.
  • You have a can-do attitude and are excited to learn new skills.
  • You are self-motivated with a passion for fixing things.
  • You can be flexible with priorities and are able to act quickly in a maintenance emergency.
