March-April Scientist in Residence: Amy Jenson

March 28, 2025, by Zofia Danielson

The Sitka Sound Science Center welcomes Amy Jenson, PhD candidate in Geophysics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, as this March’s Scientist in Residency Fellow (SIRF). The Sitka Sound Science Center’s SIRF program offers scientists four weeks to focus on their research while connecting with the community in various settings.

Amy Jenson is a PhD candidate in Geophysics at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, specializing in glaciology. Her research focuses on tidewater glaciers in Greenland, examining the factors that drive seasonal changes in ice flow. She is particularly interested in subglacial water flow and its role in glacier dynamics, including its influence on ice velocity.

Jenson has also studied outburst floods, modeling how water can rapidly drain beneath glaciers, similar to the flooding events observed at the Mendenhall Glacier. Originally from Southeast Alaska, she looks forward to sharing her research and its connections to the region’s dynamic coastal landscape with the Sitka community.

During her time in Sitka, Jenson will work with Sitka High School’s physical science classes to explore Sitka’s glacial past. Learn more about Amy Jenson’s research on Raven Radio’s morning interview on March 28th at 8:30am or at the Natural History Seminar, on April 3rd at 7pm, UAS Room 229. She will also host after-hours programming at SSSC. Learn more about these events at www.sitkascience.org.
