Afterschool Programs

January 17, 2024, by Lisa Teas Conaway

Thanks to the Thriving Communities Program made possible by the State’s Rural Alaska Community Action Program (RurAL CAP) Grant that was awarded to the Sitka Sound Science Center in August 2023 we have been able to offer an array of options to children in 3rd through 8th grade.

From Symmetries in the aquarium to Storytelling, our after-school educator Maia Carter has created wonderful interactive activities. All classes are offered free of charge and transportation from school to the Science Center is included.

There is still time to register for the upcoming sessions below just follow the links. Email Maia mcarter@sitkascience.org or call 651-491-5044 with any questions.

Science of Bookmaking | Thursday, from 3pm to 5pm
Experiment with papermaking, natural coloring, and bookbinding techniques at SSSC! Over the course of 6 classes, we will create our own handbound journals from recycled paper.
Transportation is available from Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary School to the Science Center. Snacks are also provided.
The class is free and is offered twice during the school year. Space is limited and registration is required. Contact Maia Carter with questions 651-491-5044 mcarter@sitkascience.org

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

Vroom-vroom! Choo-choo! Plane noise-plane noise! What could be more fun than exploring the fast and exciting world of transportation? Join us at SSSC to learn all about automobile maintenance basics, build your own solar car, experiment with twisting and turning model trains, and work as a team to assemble an RC aircraft! Transportation is available from Blatchley Middle School to the Science Center and snacks are also provided. This is a free program, but space is limited.

Register today!

This program meets on Wednesdays, 3:30-5:00pm, January 24-April 24.
