Bill Coltharp

Aquaculture Director

Bill Coltharp is the Aquaculture Director for the Sitka Sound Science Center.  He came to Sitka to attend Sheldon Jackson College in 1980, and knew if he could make it through the October rains, he would probably stay here the rest of his life. He completed an Associate of Science degree in Forestry in 1982, but realized that he wasn’t interested in logging or surveying jobs, but wanted to stay.  He took odd jobs around town and lived in a log cabin next to Indian river that the forestry department had built. Bill met the love of his life, Kristi, who happened to be the college recruiter. They married in 1986 and she talked him into going back to school for a Bachelor's of Science degree in Aquatic Resources.  They have two beautiful children, Jess and Ahna, and three grandchildren.  He worked as the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery Manager and taught fisheries classes for 10 years. After leaving Sheldon Jackson, he worked for NSRAA at Medvejie Hatchery for 19 years, expanding his hatchery knowledge.  He loves hunting, fishing and camping, as well as skiing the mountains around Sitka.
