Title: Facility Maintenance Manager (full-time position)
Location: Sitka Sound Science Center, Sitka, Alaska

Salary: $40,000 to $45,000 DOE

The Sitka Sound Science Center in Sitka, Alaska is a nonprofit dedicated to science education and scientific research. The Science Center operates the Molly Ahlgren Aquarium and the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery which is one of the oldest hatcheries in the State of Alaska serving as an educational training facility since 1974. The Sitka Sound Science Center primary operations are located in two 1920s era historic buildings that are contributing structures to the Sheldon Jackson National Historic Landmark. The buildings house office, laboratory and classroom space as well as scientific, hatchery and aquarium operations. The facilities are open to the public including tourists, students, residents and scientists from around the nation.

Duties: The Facility Maintenance Manager will work under the direction of the Aquaculture and Facilities Director. This unlicensed maintenance position is responsible for the operation, upkeep, repair and improvement of the historic Sage and Mill Buildings, including the Sheldon Jackson salmon hatchery and its associated facilities, all water intake structures, pipelines, anchorages, net pens, stand-by generators, pumps, etc. The Maintenance Manager may supervise on occasion an assistant, intern or additional technicians or laborers. Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Operation, maintenance and repair of diesel & gasoline engines, power generators, electrical systems, heating systems/boilers, backhoe, excavator, forklift, boats, outboard motors, small engines, pumps, hatchery water systems including UV water purification equipment, piping and plumbing, phones, and household appliances
• Maintenance, repair or construction of hatchery buildings and equipment
• Work with outside contractors on more extensive or technical plumbing, electrical, and power generation repairs and upgrades, and new building construction
• Cost estimation, material and supply orders, and completion of various types of construction, fabrication and repair projects, including metal work and welding (especially aluminum), piping and plumbing, carpentry and concrete
• Plan and maintain records of daily work, purchasing, inventory, construction, and maintenance
• Perform additional duties required for successful operation and maintenance of an Alaska salmon hatchery and science support facility including a saltwater aquarium and touch-tank exhibit.
• Maintain a clean, well-organized work, storage and public environment at the Science Center and hatchery that reflects a high degree of professionalism and pride in the operations.

Qualifications: A successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated previous successful employment in a similar position. This person must have a valid driver’s license, be in good physical health, be able to lift at least 50 lbs., be able to withstand cold temperatures and wet environments, and frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, stand and walk for long periods of time. In addition, a successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Significant experience in power plant, building, and heavy and light equipment maintenance, repair and operation Ability to work independently in a safe, responsible and professional manner.
• Extensive knowledge of plumbing, piping, and pumping is necessary. Freshwater and seawater recirculation system familiarity is highly desirable.
• Fabrication skills, particularly with aluminum, pvc, HDPE, and fiberglass are needed
• Excellent trouble-shooting and organizational skills, plus leadership qualities
• Favorable employer evaluations regarding experience, skills, aptitude and attitude (references required)
