Repairs underway at the snowy Harbor Mountain Weather Station

November 1, 2021, by Alex McCarrel

Winter came early for the Harbor Mountain Weather Station.

The Sitka Sound Science Center was honored to host Dr. Ronald Daanen on Thursday, October 28th, for a fast-paced day of sensing station troubleshooting. Dr. Daanen is a geohydrologist with the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys who flew in from Fairbanks to take a look at the unresponsive Harbor Mountain Weather Station. The sensing station monitors wind speed and direction, precipitation, temperature, humidity, and snow depth, which when running you can access the data here in real-time. Breathtaking views and fresh snowfall welcomed Dr. Daanen and SSSC’s research coordinator Alex McCarrel as they worked on bringing the weather station back online. Despite best efforts, the Harbor Mountain weather station continues to be finicky, with future troubleshooting plans in the works! Once up and running again, the Harbor Mountain Weather Station will aid in making informed decisions about landslide risk, as well as offering detailed and accurate forecasts to our community of fisherman, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts who rely on it year-round.
