Opening the Box
Middle school students at Blatchley Middle School and in other Southeast Alaska communities are “Opening the Box” on STEAM activities with Makers Boxes.
STEAM refers to topics and thinking skills related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. In a remarkable program developed by Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI), enough boxes with these types of activities and related supplies were sent to Sitka for every middle schooler enrolled in the Sitka School District. This week, the students will “open the box” at school and explore some of the activities together facilitated by their teachers. This is the first of 4 Maker Boxes that students will receive this school year. Each box is themed by cultural values and includes a host of STEAM activities to encourage curiosity and exploration through a cultural lens.
Sitka Sound Science Center enjoys collaborating with SHI on this project and will be hosting an event that ties into each of the boxes for students. We look forward to continuing to work with Sealaska Heritage Institute, Sitka School District, and Sitka Native Education Program for the Maker Boxes to follow.
