Sitka Sound Science Center in Florence Italy

November 20, 2023, by Lisa Teas Conaway

The 6th World Landslide Forum just concluded in Florence Italy last week. It saw 5 continents, 69 countries, and over 1,100 people come together around landslide research and development, and this time it included the Sitka Sound Science Center. SSSC Executive Director Lisa Busch and Dr. Annette Payton attended and were invited to present on some of the research happening right here in Sitka around landslides through our Kutí project. Lisa Busch presented on our community-based landslide warning system and Annette Payton presented on how she developed the model that informs the warning system. Annette also co-chaired a session on innovations in early warning systems.

“It was pretty neat to see that Sitka and our Southeast Alaska partner communities are part of a worldwide group responding to climate change in a positive way by trying to detect landslide risk in advance in order to save lives. Also, amazing that Sitka Sound Science Center is representing at an international conference.” Lisa Busch

The Forum meets every three years. It’s amazing to hear about landslide science from around the world and all the clever ways researchers are trying to protect people through monitoring and warning.
