SPIFy Journal – documenting progress

January 21, 2022, by admin

This online journal will document the progress of SSSC’s new facility as we begin construction before we get started SSSC would like to say Thank You to the Rasmuson Foundation and the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for their generous support of SPIFy.

In November, we remembered the beginnings of the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery and toasted the 1970’s era building that was the original spawning shed. After a toast we began demolition to make way for the new raceways, building, and water system that will become SPIFy (Spawning and Incubation Facility).

So it begins with the demolition of the old spawn shed.

After the demolition of the spawning shed it was time to begin the rest of the demolition of the race ways and concrete slab that was the base for the original spawn shed. Unfortunately just as the construction about to begin oil was discovered in the hatchery raceway. The Environmental Protection Agency, SSSSC Staff, Alaska Department of Ecology and the US Coast Guard determined that a concrete patch was needed to keep the oil in place since they weren’t able to determine the source or the quantity of oil. This patch includes a basin and new 6″ inch slab wall that will encapsulate any new oil and after 2 months this part of the project is nearing completion.

This will be a common site in the next couple of months.
Lots of concrete will be used in the SPIFy project.
Construction continues between the tides which requires patience and good timing.
