Sprouts – “Backyard Bugs”

April 14, 2020, by Kristina Tirman

There are few activities that are more fun than going on a backyard bug hunt, which is exactly why this week’s Sprouts Science Bite is all about celebrating and investigating our creepy-crawly friends and neighbors!

Insects are so important to our ecosystem and we often don’t give them the appreciation they deserve. Not only do insects serve as food for other animals, but many of them act as pollinators, helping plants reproduce, and decomposers, breaking down dead or decaying organic matter and converting it into nutrient rich soil. Without insects, many plants and animals would not survive. So next time you see an insect, instead of saying “eww!” be sure to say “thank you!”.
