Summer Camp Roundup

August 11, 2023, by Lisa Teas Conaway

Summer camps have wrapped up at the Sitka Sound Science Center, and what an amazing journey it has been. We have served over 140 participants in 10 different camps spanning a range of subjects including: chemistry, physics, microbiology, intertidal ecology, trail engineering, bike mechanics, ocean recreation, and entomology. We also built and strengthened partnerships with many community organizations through co-hosting and developing new programs. Our community’s overwhelming positive response to our programs kept our Education team feeling inspired and energized over the last two months, and we’re carrying that momentum into the fall as we begin to plan further opportunities for learning at SSSC.

2023 Summer Camp Roundup:

  • Salty Symbiotes
  • Salmon Skin Leather Making – taught by Karen MacIntyre of Creative Native
  • Re-Inventing the Wheel
  • Phase Change and the Stuff In Between
  • Banter with Bugs
  • Ocean Adventure
  • Revolution Engineering Camp – Trails for Bikes & Tables for Streams (co-hosted with Salty Spoke Community Bike Co-op and Sitka Conservation Society)
    • Design It!
    • Build It!
  • Family Camp – Masses of Marvelous Microbes
  • Snorkel Club
  • Library Program: Pre-K Plankton Party

Many thanks to all of our community partners including: Derek and Melissa Sikes with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Sitka Trail Works, Sitka Conservation Society, Sitka Public Library, Salty Spoke Community Bike Co-op, Sitka 4-H Club, and US Forest Service.

All our summer camps were made possible by a generous grant from the State of Alaska’s Department of Early Education. Thank you for helping us to bring a little more science and wonder to the world.

Some things to keep on your radar for fall will include: Sprouts our preschool science course starting in September, science education after school programs at the aquarium, Sitka WhaleFest with multiple opportunities for adults and children, and another Fish Skin Leather workshop with visiting artist Karen McIntyre.

If your child participated in one of this years summer camps please take a moment to fill out our survey. All responses are anonymous and any insights would be helpful for our continued development of education programing.
