Tackling the Deep Freeze at the Sheldon Jackson Hatchery.

January 10, 2022, by admin

The Indian River intake needed extra attention during last week’s frigid temperatures.

With these frigid temperatures last week here in Sitka, the hatchery has been working hard to maintain the systems. The incoming freshwater temperatures from Indian River dropped down to 0 degrees C (32 degrees F), which caused ice to form in our round pond drains, on our freshwater treatment system, and on our intake system at Indian River. The Hatchery Crew started adding saltwater to the systems at the hatchery to increase water temperatures and added bubblers at the intake to create more water movement. These measures really helped to manage the ice as we awaited the warmer weather!

The Hatchery Crew added salt to the water system to lessen the formation in the round pounds.
