The salmon have returned!

August 21, 2024, by Lisa Teas Conaway

After 2 to 5 years out in the wild the pink and chum are pushing at our barrier nets ready to come home.
We are prepping our hatchery to receive the incoming salmon and soon will be starting to spawn them to seed the next generations destined to call Sitka Sound Science Center home. Each year we gather enough eggs to raise and release 3 million chum, and 3 million pink salmon that will supplement our local fishing industry and educate our population on the importance of salmon within our ecosystem and workforce.
As a nonprofit we work hard to keep our mission of education and research front and center. Our hatchery program enables us to bring all age levels of Sitka students out of the classroom and into the hatchery gaining invaluable hands-on learning experiences.
