U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadet and SSSC intern Karisa Maurer recognized at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium!
Karisa was one of the two US Coast Guard Academy cadets at the Sitka Sound Science Center for a 6-week internship during the summer of 2015. During the internship, she developed a project to monitor kelp forest extent changes alongside environmental parameters (e.g., temperature, salinity, fluorescence) as part of our Alaska SeaGrant funded Coastal Resiliency Project. Karisa designed a poster to explain her methodology, first year of results, and the ongoing partnership between SSSC and USCGA.
This summer, two new USCG Academy cadets will continue and expand upon Karisa’s project. During this year’s Alaska Marine Science Symposium in Anchorage, the Alaska SeaGrant’s Marine Advisory Program and the Alaska Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) recognized Karisa’s undergraduate-level poster with a conference-wide announcement and cash award!
We couldn’t be more proud!
