UPDATE – The Chum Salmon Project

May 12, 2021, by Jay Stilwell

Scouting the field camp location involved lots of hiking in remote places.

Field Project UPDATE- In preparation for another year of studying chum salmon in SE Alaska. SSSC staff spent a week in the Juneau area to start staging for our remote field camp, scouting locations, and hiking the creeks. USFS biologists, archeologists, and permit coordinators joined us to scout camp locations at our most remote site.

The establishment of this remote field camp has posed many new and exciting challenges this year. Our camp will place up to 6 people off the grid for nearly 7 weeks. They will not have internet or phone service, water will be sourced from a nearby stream, and power provided by generators and solar powered battery banks. This is shaping up to be a true Alaskan adventure and we can’t wait to get started.
