WELCOME BACK – DR. GARY GREENE SHARING WITH SITKA HIS KNOWLEDGE OF LOCAL EARTHQUAKE FAULT & MORE

March 25, 2022, by admin

Dr. Gary Greene

The Science Center is excited to welcome Dr. Gary Greene back to Sitka next week as a visiting marine geologist. Gary is no stranger to Sitka and the Science Center. In fact, he was one of the first Scientist in Residency Fellows (SIRFs) in 2013 (see our SIRF profiles). While he is based in California, Gary’s research stretches along the plate boundaries (the North American and Pacific Plates, that is) all the way up to Sitka, Alaska. It’s work studying those plate interactions that bring Gary back to Sitka, now as a visiting scientist. This trip comes at the end of a years-long study he has been involved with to study tectonics off the coast of Southeast Alaska. Specifically, Gary and a team of scientists have been working to image the Queen Charlotte Fault with more detail and scope than ever before. This important imaging will answer questions about how, why, and where earthquakes are likely to happen along the fault, and related hazards such as ground shaking, underwater landslides, and the potential for tsunamis.

During his time in Sitka, Dr. Greene will participate in radio interviews, teach a class with the earth and environmental sciences course at Mount Edgecumbe Highschool, present at ALFA’s spring EXPO event, be an onboard speaker for the Sitka Whalefest Food Web Cruise, and host a series of public, educational events.
