Spring in Sitka Sound
The Food Web Cruise is a great opportunity to experience that first breath of spring on Sitka Sound. With help from Allen Marine, Sitka Sound Science Center puts on this cruise every spring as a fundraiser for Sitka WhaleFest (which occurs in the fall).
In March, Sitka Sound is alive with herring, birds, whales and sealions. The air is filled with the salty smell of spring on the ocean, the lovely sound of seabirds and the surprising sightings of hungry marine mammals. The Science Center’s Food Web Cruise brings together experienced naturalists who provide local knowledge and natural history of the area. They also offer interesting commentary on what’s happening in the Sound while participants gaze out over the scenery. Nibble on some brunch food in the warmth of an Allen Marine cabin or stand on deck and let your senses be rewarded with the Sitka spring wind and the view of the mountains and the sea from a floating platform.
For thousands of years, the human relationship to the natural world has been seasonal. With increasing light during the day, spring is a time of renewal and new beginnings. The Food Web Cruise is a special adventure that shows off Sitka Sound to visitors who come before the official start of the tourist season and a great moment to remind residents why living on this tiny island in the North Pacific is so magnificent.
